A COUCH POTATO (9 клас)

Forty-three-year-old Brian Blakey from Birmingham is sitting on his sofa and telling me about his perfect day.
When I wake up I don’t get up immediately. I turn on the television and watch the children’s programmes and old movies until  half past ten. Then I get up, go downstairs and switch on the telly. For lunch, I have biscuit and a glass of milk, and I watch the news. In the afternoon, I often watch another old film – they’re showing some good ones at the moment. In the evening, I often watch soap operas or sport and the news again. I like the main news at six o’clock. At nine thirty, if there’s a good play on BBC2, I switch on and watch it. Then at night I watch more films I usually switch off the telly at about two o’clock. I never watch TV all night.
I watch TV for sixteen or seventeen hours a day. I also do some exercises every day. I take Tina, the dog, for a walk every afternoon. I don’t go far, of course. I walk to the wall outside my house. I always take my portable telly and sit on the wall while the dog walks around .
Of course, I couldn’t live this lifestyle without a good wife. She’s not at home now because she’s working, but she always makes my meals. We haven’t got much money, you know, but we’re happy. Sit down, watch the telly – you’ve got the world at your feet. And in your hand. Great!

About the Traffic in London”(7 клас)

A quick and easy way to get to different places in the city is to use an underground train. The trains run all day and most of the night. It’s better to buy a ticket before you get on the train and not to make journey between eight o’clock and ten o’clock in the morning, or four o’clock and six o’clock in the evening. These are called the “rush” hours.
Thousands of people are going to work or coming home again then, and it is difficult to move or to find a place to sit on the train.
There are some special visitors’ buses. They take visitors from different countries and cities to many of the interesting places in the city on one journey. It takes about one and a half hours. But visitors can break their journey and get off (and on again) at the different places they want to visit.
London taxis are called “Black cabs”. Most of them are black, but some are not.
Everyone can stop a taxi if it has a “For Hire” sign on it. The drivers are usually friendly and helpful.
Visitors can take a boat trip along the river Thames. Boats leave Westminster Pier and Charing Cross Pier, and they go to Tower Pier and Greenwich.
Between April and October, visitors can take a longer boat trip to Hampton Court (about four hours) - a beautiful palace in a big park.

 MY WORKING DAY(6 клас)

At sever o'clock in the morning the alarm-o'clock rings. I wake up. It is time for me to get up. I jump out of bed and open the window. Then I turn on the radio and do my morning exercises. When I have done my exercises, I go into the bathroom.
I turn on the water tap, brush my teeth and wash myself. I comb and brush my hair with my comb and hairbrush. Then I make my bed. After that I dress. I put on my shirt and trousers (my dress), my socks (stockings), my boots (shoes) and my jacket.
I take my place at the table and have breakfast. I eat two eggs, bread and butter. Sometimes I have fried potatoes for breakfast. Then  I drink a cup of coffee or a glass of tea.
After breakfast I go to school. The school is not far from our house. I do not take a tram or a trolley-bus. I go on foot. It takes me ten minutes to get there.
When I come to school I leave my coat and cap in the cloak-room, then I go to my classroom.
We have six lessons every day. Our lessons begin at half past eight and are over at a quarter past two.
When my lessons are over I go home.  When I come home I take off my coat and cap, wash my hands and have my dinner. I lay the table. I put a glass, a plate, a knife, a fork and a spoon at my place. I eat a plateful of soup, then I have some meat and vegetables, an apple, a pear or an orange. My Granny often gives me apples to eat. She likes to say, " An apple a day keeps the doctor away".
After dinner I wash up (I wash the dishes).
I am always ready to help my Granny about the house. I dust the rooms, sweep the floor, help Granny to hang out the washing, do the shopping (go to the shop for bread or milk).
Then I sit down at my desk and do my lessons. Having prepared the lessons I go to the yard and play with my friends. There are many trees in our yard. Just behind our house there is a fine playground where we can play different games.
When  come home I have my supper. I have some porridge and a glass of sour milk for supper.
In the evening I read books, play chess with my father or watch TV films.
At half past ten I go to bed.

shakespeare(9 клас)

William Shakespeare was the greatest writer in the English language. He was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of eighteen he married Anne Hathaway, who was eight years older than him. A few years later he moved to London, where he worked as an actor and a playwriter.
Shakespeare wrote thirty-seven plays and 154 sonnets (a kind of poem). His most famous plays are the four great tragedies Othello, Macbeth, Hamlet, and King Lear. He also wrote several historical plays. Eight of these plays were about English kings, including Richard II, Henry V and Richard Ш. Others dealt with Roman history and included Julius Caesar and Anthony and Cleopatra. But not all of Shakespeare's plays were serious. He also wrote comedies, such as A Midsummer Night's Dream and Twelfth Night.
Shakespeare died in Stratford on 23 April 1616, but his plays are still very popular today. They have been translated into several different languages, and many of them have been made into films, both in English and other languages. Shakespeare's plays are about  love, power, ambition, death and so on. So, his plays are just as actual today as they were in the sixteenth century. To show this, modern directors sometimes do the plays in modern dress, and one of Shakespeare's plays has even been turned into a modem musical. His romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, was the basis for the musical West Side Story.

The most read  tabloids are The Daily Mail, The Daily Express, The Daily Mirror, The Sun and The Daily Star. It is washed by two seas: the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. There are two mountains in Ukraine: the Carpathians in the west and the Crimea Mountains in the south of the country. They protect the country from bitter winds. Besides Ukraine is a big country. So, it has different types of climate in various parts of it.
In the south of Ukraine the climate is subtropical. It means that summer is very hot, long and dry; winter is mild and short.
In the north of Ukraine the climate is moderately continental with warm summer and cold winter. The rivers and lakes freeze in winter. In the east of Ukraine there are more sunny days and less rains than in the west of the country. The average temperature for spring is +8; for summer +22; for autumn +6; for winter -4.But there are days in winter with temperature -20, -30 and in summer the temperature may be + 30, +35.
On the whole the climate in Ukraine is favourable for the life of people, it is good for growing corn, fruit and vegetables. It is suitable for a nice rest in all seasons.
Though it is necessary to mention that the climate in our country as well as all over the world is changing and unfortunately not for better. It is getting warmer. As a result we have less snow in winter and less rains in summer, more dry winds, storms, floods and different natural disasters which bring great damage to the nature and they are very dangerous for people.
It’s interesting to know that only 25 % of the territory of the Earth is favourable for the life of people. Fortunately Ukraine belongs to such places and we must appreciate this.

Christmas comes in Ukraine on the 7th of January. But the day before it and the evening which is called Sviatvechir are very important too.
The hostess must wake up early that day. First she must cross herself, stand to prepare twelve Lenten dishes for the Holy Dinner. It can be: borsch, fish, mushrooms, vegetable pies. The main dish ”kutia” is cooked from wheat grains, walnuts, resins, poppy seeds and dry fruit compote.

There are a lot of monuments to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War everywhere in Ukraine.
The most remarkable of them are the Sevastopol panorama building, Babyn Yar and the Park of Glory in Kyiv.

Reading.

On June 22, 1941, the peaceful life of people was interrupted. The undeclared war waged by Nazi Germany began and a wartime terrible calendar came into effect.
Ukraine became the scene of fierce battles. Bomb explosions  shook the city of Sevastopol’. The Crimea at once became a front-line zone.
The Black Sea Fleet under the command of Admiral F. Oktiabrs’kyi91899-1969) was one of the first formations to have faced the enemy attack.
By summer 1942, the enemy occupied the whole territory of Ukraine.
On May 30, 1942, the Ukrainian headquarters of the partisan movement were set up. They were headed by T.Strokach (1903-1963).
The leaders of the partisan movement in Sumy area became S.Kovpak(1887-1967)O.Fedorov.
Partisan detachments numbered 500,000 fighting men.
The enemy gained control of Kyiv on September 21, 1941.
Those were hard days for the city. Six thousand buildings and many monuments were destroyed. Industrial plants, museum exhibits, food stuff were sent to Germany.
More than a thousand industrial enterprises were devastated. The railway bridges across the Dnipro were ruined. The Cathedral of the Assumption, which was built in the 11th century, became a heap of ruins. Whole blocks of flats were reduced to ashes. Hreshchatyk, the main thoroughfare of Kyiv, lay in ruins.
In a planned operation the fascists dynamited 324 buildings, Coservatoire, the drama theatre.Nearly 200,000 citizens of Kyiv were massacred and defence,
more than 100,000 deported to Germany. But Kyiv did not give in. From the very first days of fascist occupation Kyivites began thair war of resistance, which continued until the Nazis were finally driven out of the city. The football players of Dynamo-Kyiv played the “match of death” and won it at the cost of their lives!!
Underground patriotic groups were organized. They struggled jointly with local partisans, and did everything possible to wrack the plans of the occupation forces. They helped prisoners escape from camps, sabotaged industry and avenged people’s deaths.
In November 1943, the troops of the First Ukrainian Front under command of General M.F. Vatutin launched a gigantic offensive near Kyiv. 14 fascist divisions were defeated and on November 6, the enemy was driven out from the Ukrainian capital.
To commemorate the heroism of Kyivites defending their city, Kyiv was honoured with the title of Hero-city. On October 8, 1944. Ukraine was liberated from the Nazi invaders. Now we celebrate Victory Day on May 9.
Ukrainian people made a worthy contribution to the cause of Victory. About 2,500,000 Ukrainians were awarded orders and medals. More than 2,000 of them were decorated with the Gold-Star of Hero. Victory was not easily won. The enemy inflicted immense devastation on Ukraine. The invaders destroyed 714 towns, more than 28, 000 villages, burned and razed to the ground 16,000 industrial enterprises, more than 32,000 schools.10 million people were deprived of homes. International Women’s Day

Activities for Women’s Day

Introduction
Learning a foreign language is not just a matter of memorizing a different set of names for the things around us, it is also an educational experience. Since our language is closely linked with our personality and culture, let’s use the process of acquiring a new language to gain further insights into our personality and culture.
The following activities will help you to have students to talk about women’s role in the world.

 Activity 1

Hand out 10-15 different cards with the names of occupations (engineer, doctor, fireman, driver, businessman etc) and two different categories- Men and Women depending who they think this job is more suitable for. Write the professions on the board under their respective genders according to what the groups of students decide. Look for differences in the final lists produced by two groups and start asking questions as to why some people believe that women are better doctors, while some believe the opposite.

Activity 2

Brainstorming. In small groups or as a class, ask students to name any famous women they know. It doesn’t matter when they lived, where , or what country they are from. See what they know. Then, ask them to name famous men they know. You can limit the choice to a country, profession, or time-period. Write all the names in two columns on the board and compare the length of two lists.

Activity 3

Common gender stereotypes exercise. Cut 20 little slips of paper- the handout of gender stereotypes expressed in terms. Pass out each slip of paper to all students. On the board there are two different lines. One is “Women are…” and the other
“Men are…”. Instruct your students to stand in front of whichever sex line their term best represents. Have students read their stereotypes and pair them with the
antonym, or the clearest opposite, to their term. There should be 10 matches.
Discuss the terms.

The list of common female and male stereotypes

         Women are                           Men are

Dependent, independent, weak, powerful, emotional, logical, implementers, decision-makers, housekeepers, breadwinners, supporters, leaders, fearful, protective, peace-makers, aggressive, flexible, focused, modest, ambitious.

Activity 4

Split the class into smaller groups for holding a discussion. Appoint a recorder and a speaker to share the high-lights with the class. An effective alternative would also be splitting the class into two groups for debates. The situation is as follows:
“Imagine you have been offered your dream job. The salary is more than you expected, the responsibilities are challenging, and you will have plenty of opportunities to reveal your skills and talents. There are opportunities for you to be promoted to a managerial position rather quickly, too. If you are interested in this, the company will provide you with self-study materials, and send you to Kyiv for your one-week training. The downside of this job is that you are required to work from 4:00 pm till 12:00 am, besides you have two working week-ends a month. The company is very concerned about the safety of its employees, and provides a van to take workers home at midnight, so personal safety is quaranteed. Your husband works days, however, and does not like the idea of your working late at night. You also have two children, aged 10 and 12, and need to supervise and help them with school work. No other family members live with you.”
Discuss: Will you take this job? What factors will you consider in making your decision? How will you work out your domestic problems? How will you resolve imminent difficulties with your husband?
